In this seasonal Kona coffee collection, you'll taste three very different Kona coffees, each best-in-class: 94pt Kona Peaberry, 94pt Kona Red Bourbon, & 94pt Kona Noir.
This is a taste of the best of Kona coffees, from heritage varieties to new horizons.
Kona Peaberry notes: Medium light - Honeysuckle, caramel, black cherry, plum
Dark - sweet pipe tobacco, chocolate, clove, smooth, robust
This is the highest rated traditional Kona Peaberry that's available. It comes from the varietal that’s been growing in Kona for more than a century and adapted to the island environment: Kona Typica. Processed using the "washed" method, it's fermented with rainwater, and dried mechanically.
The quality, varietal, grade and process highlights the best features of traditional Kona coffee. It's smooth, rich, sweet, chocolaty and nutty with undertones of dark fruit.
Kona Red Bourbon notes: Medium light- Chocolate ganache, sweet cherry, butterscotch
Dark -Sweet black tea, cherries, brown sugar, milk chocolate
Red Bourbon is a varietal that's been growing obscurely on the Big Island for several decades, especially in Ka’u. The varietal itself, however, is centuries old.
The Bourbon coffee varietal is widely recognized for being very sweet, with deep buttery chocolate flavors and layers of fruit. Unfortunately, it's also more susceptible to disease and poses a greater risk to farmers. So, at this time, it's quite rare.
This Kona Red Bourbon was processed using modern techniques that have spread throughout the Islands in the past half dozen years, using wine and champagne yeasts to ferment coffee during the washed process. After fermenting, it was sun dried on patios.
Kona Noir notes: Medium light - Currant, jasmine, gingerbread
Dark - black cherries, red wine, candied ginger, and molasses
Kona Noir is the most modern of varietals in this collection, and also the rarest and newest to Hawaii. The variety itself is called SL-34, which, if we’re being honest, sounds a bit like a sports car or home appliance.
SL-34 is a varietal that was bred in Kenya in the 1950s with the goal of naturally breeding a complex, high-quality coffee with high disease and drought resistance. Fortunately, it turned out to be an extraordinary, complex, fruity, and floral coffee, and this variety has since helped to create the signature flavor of Kenyan coffees. Unfortunately, it wasn't as disease resistance as the original breeders were hoping.
Of the three in this collection, you'll find the greatest range of complexity, fruit and floral overtones in Kona Noir.
Kona Noir was processed using the same modern techniques as this Kona Red Bourbon, using wine and champagne yeasts to ferment coffee during the washed process. After fermenting, it was sun dried on patios.

Because Espresso Bites are made without stabilizers or preservatives, they may bloom or melt when shipping temperatures exceed 80 F. If this is a concern in your location please select FedEx shipping.
If you notice a white color to your bar, it's perfectly safe to eat. This happens when the cocoa butter softens and migrates to the surface. It happens more often when shipping in warm weather. Learn more about blooming.
Espresso Bites that melt or bloom when shipped via FedEx are eligible for a full refund or credit.
Espresso Bites that melt or bloom when the buyer elects Free Shipping or standard USPS are eligible for a credit.
