KONA NOIR | Fruit-Forward, Rare Kona SL34

If you love the fruity-floral complexity of Geisha coffees, or the currant and wine-like flavors of coffees from Kenya, you'll love Kona Noir.

Kona Noir comes from a coffee variety that is rarely found on the Hawaiian Islands: SL-34.

This variety was originally bred in Kenya and spread to farms throughout the region thanks to its exceptional quality, large beans and yield potential. It has since become the iconic coffee of the Kenya flavor profile, often noted as having flavors of currant, red wine, cola, pomegranate and tomato.

Growing this variety on Hawaii Island soil changes the profile, as does the cultivation methods employed by producers.

Depending on the roast level you get, you might taste molasses and ginger (darker roast) or red wine and currants (a lighter roast).

Kona Noir was grown by two exceptional neighboring farmers in Kona, Kraig & Franc, and processed via controlled fermentation with a wine yeast that is commonly used to ferment Riesling, Viognier, and Chardonnay. By using this wine yeast, the farmers are 'dialing in' the flavor profile of the coffee in the same way that vintners do with wine.

Coffee Review Assessment, 2022:

Blind Assessment:
Elegantly fruit-toned, gently spice-driven. Date, clove, blood orange, baking chocolate, cedar in aroma and cup. Complex bittersweet structure with winey acidity; plush, syrupy mouthfeel. The resonant finish is centered around notes of date, blood orange and clove.

Notes:
Produced by Kraig Lee and Franck Carisey entirely of the SL34 variety of Arabica, and processed by the washed method (fruit skin and flesh are removed from the beans before they are dried) with the addition of wine yeasts during fermentation. Big Island Coffee is an award-winning coffee roaster operated with hands-on passion by Kelleigh Stewart and Brandon von Damitz.

The Bottom Line:
A distinctive Kona cup from the rare Kenya-derived SL34 variety of Arabica, worth seeking out for its confident fruit and nuanced spice notes.

    ESPRESSO BITES

Because Espresso Bites are made without stabilizers or preservatives, they may bloom or melt when shipping temperatures exceed 80 F. If this is a concern in your location please select FedEx shipping.

If you notice a white color to your bar, it's perfectly safe to eat. This happens when the cocoa butter softens and migrates to the surface. It happens more often when shipping in warm weather. Learn more about blooming.

Espresso Bites that melt or bloom when shipped via FedEx are eligible for a full refund or credit.

Espresso Bites that melt or bloom when the buyer elects Free Shipping or standard USPS are eligible for a credit.
