A Unique Big Island Favorite: Kaʻu Giant Maragogipe
Maragogipe is a unique giant bean coffee variety that is considered a top-tier variety by coffee connoisseurs around the world. As one of our top requested coffees, it’s highly sought after and offered just a few times each year.
Maragogipe has been planted in a handful of farms across the Hawaiian Islands, most notably in the Ka‘ū district, but usually planted in very low numbers and scattered amongst the more dominant varietals like typica and caturra.
Maragogipe is a natural mutation of Typica (an Arabica species) that was first identified in 1870 in the Brazilian city of Maragogipe. It’s often referred to as “elephant bean” coffee. For over a century, it was considered an inferior varietal, as its low yield and rust susceptibility made it unfavorable compared to more common varietals. Hence, coffee growers commonly replace it with varieties that have stronger yields and improved disease resistance.
This Kaʻū Maragogipe is milled in small batches and roasted to order.
Please note: Maragogipe is roasted 1-2x per week. Everything in your cart will roast and ship together.
OVERALL RATING: 94
Notes: Produced on a small farm in the Ka’u growing region and processed by the wet, or washed method. Big Island Coffee is an award-winning coffee roaster and coffee farm operated with hands-on passion by Kelleigh Stewart and Brandon von Damitz.
Blind assessment: Deep-toned, sweetly savory. White nectarine, narcissus, hop flowers, sandalwood, wild honey in aroma and cup. Richly sweet structure with gentle, round but engaging acidity; plush, syrupy mouthfeel. Richly bittersweet finish centered around honey and hop flowers in the short with nectarine notes returning in the long.
The bottom line: A beautiful expression of the giant Maragogipe variety of Arabica: rich, deep, and confident, with notes of wild honey and sweet stone fruit.

If you notice a white color to your bar, it's perfectly safe to eat. This happens when the cocoa butter softens and migrates to the surface. It happens more often when shipping in warm weather. Learn more about blooming.

Cristal, Kobe Beef, Beluga, and Hawaiian coffees.
Only the best of the best comestibles are grown and prepared in their country/state of origin and they all taste as rich as their price. There are many fine coffee roasters around the World but most must import their beans from somewhere else. I buy ALL of my Hawaiian coffees from local roasters reviewed at coffeereview.com and BICR's Maragogipe is my all-time favorite.
Extremely! Loved the big flavors
regret that I did not order more of it before it sold out
The Ka’u Giant Maragogipe might be the best coffee I’ve ever tasted. I regret that I did not order more of it before it sold out.
I am so happy I found you folks! When I opened the shipping envelope, before I even opened the coffee bag, I was so entranced with the aroma I already knew it was going to be delicious. I really enjoyed the coffee! Great flavor, smooth and balanced, a real treat!
A rare and great coffee is found in Ka’u
This coffee is very aromatic, so the cup entices your senses before you sip. The medium roast enhances the florals notes and the coffee is bright but with muted acidity and an earthy finish that lingers pleasantly. I found Maragogipe beans years ago fell in love with the coffee. I love this Big Island version.
I was very pleased with the various flavors in the beans. Different than anything I’ve ever tasted. I appreciate the direct contact on it too.
