Kaʻū Maragogipe is one of the rarest and most distinctive coffees we offer—highly sought after, frequently requested, and available only a few times each year. Known for its unusually large size, Maragogipe (pronounced mah-rah-go-HEE-peh) is a natural mutation of the Arabica Typica variety, first identified in 1870 near the Brazilian city of Maragogipe. Often called the “elephant bean,” it produces a visually striking green bean with a reputation for elegance and complexity in the cup.
Despite its exceptional flavor potential, Maragogipe has long been overlooked by commercial growers due to its low yield and susceptibility to rust. In Hawai‘i, it’s planted sparingly—typically as a curiosity—on a few small farms, most notably in the Kaʻū district, where microclimates and careful cultivation allow it to thrive. This limited-lot Kaʻū Maragogipe is milled in small batches and roasted to order.
In the cup, it’s vivid and floral, with explosive notes of peach, bergamot, jasmine, and cherry, anchored by deep-toned honey and hop flowers. Its structure is juicy and expressive, with a complexity that rewards attention and a finish that lingers with grace.
OVERALL RATING: 94
Notes: Produced on a small farm in the Ka’u growing region and processed by the wet, or washed method. Big Island Coffee is an award-winning coffee roaster and coffee farm operated with hands-on passion by Kelleigh Stewart and Brandon von Damitz.
Coffee Review blind assessment:
A beautiful expression of the giant Maragogipe variety of Arabica: rich, deep, and confident, with notes of wild honey and sweet stone fruit. Deep-toned, sweetly savory. White nectarine, narcissus, hop flowers, sandalwood, wild honey in aroma and cup.
Blind assessment: Deep-toned, sweetly savory. White nectarine, narcissus, hop flowers, sandalwood, wild honey in aroma and cup. Richly sweet structure with gentle, round but engaging acidity; plush, syrupy mouthfeel. Richly bittersweet finish centered around honey and hop flowers in the short with nectarine notes returning in the long.
The bottom line: A beautiful expression of the giant Maragogipe variety of Arabica: rich, deep, and confident, with notes of wild honey and sweet stone fruit.

Because Espresso Bites are made without stabilizers or preservatives, they may bloom or melt when shipping temperatures exceed 80 F. If this is a concern in your location please select FedEx shipping.
If you notice a white color to your bar, it's perfectly safe to eat. This happens when the cocoa butter softens and migrates to the surface. It happens more often when shipping in warm weather. Learn more about blooming.
