  • Tasting notes: crisp rose, ripe pear, raw hazelnuts, floral honey, black cherry, fresh-cut oak; intensely aromatic, syrupy sweet, ripe, balanced, and flavorful
  • Origin: Ka’u coffee, Big Island
  • Roast: medium-light

Richly floral- and nut-toned. Freesia, almond brittle, baking chocolate, black cherry, fresh-cut oak in aroma and cup. Deeply sweet structure with pert acidity; full, satiny-smooth mouthfeel. Finish consolidates to almond brittle and freesia.

This vibrant cup is among the best Ka'u coffees we've had the pleasure to serve.

Ripe red coffee cherry, hand-sorted, meticulously tended, high elevation. Intensely aromatic, syrupy sweet, and balanced. Just look at the photos.

On a small, lush farm in the heart of majestic Wood Valley at 2300’, Alla and Rus - the couple pictured here - and farm owner Dennis have spent the past three years doing much of what we did our first years in Puna: pruning coffee trees, fertilizing, pulling weeds, rehabilitating the field day by day. Simultaneously, they've been harvesting and processing coffee, experimenting, and testing ways to improve quality.

We’ve tasted this lot throughout the years and, while it’s been very good, this season’s crop is at another level: intensely fragrant, juicy, ripe, and sweet.

And so to do this great Ka'u coffee justice, and as is our practice when we bring in new Hawaiian coffees, we've carefully designed the roast profile (recipe) to reveal the exotic, inherent, and ripe hidden flavors. Freshly milled and then roasted, we cupped 10 different roast profiles before selecting our favorites. And that is what we're now offering here.

Notes: Produced on a small farm in Wood Valley at an altitude of 2,300 feet in the Kau coffee growing region and processed by the wet, or washed method. Big Island Coffee is an award-winning coffee roaster and coffee farm operated with hands-on passion by Kelleigh Stewart and Brandon von Damitz. Visit for more information.

Blind assessment: Richly floral- and nut-toned. Freesia, almond brittle, baking chocolate, black cherry, fresh-cut oak in aroma and cup. Deeply sweet structure with pert acidity; full, satiny-smooth mouthfeel. Finish consolidates to almond brittle and freesia.

The bottom line: A higher-altitude Kau coffee characterized by spicy floral and sweet nut tones.

I am Hooked

WOW! One taste and I was hooked. 5 stars times two.....Ordered this as a comparison with the Kona Peabody. Used my technivorm Moccamaster to brew it. .I actually liked the Ka'u better. Light and very flavorful. Rich & creamy flavors. Can't quite explain it. I've been looking for a GOOD Kona coffee since I tasted it years ago, but have found so many just tasted bitter & old and just like regular old coffee. This is great coffee. Definitely will be ordering it again and again. Thank you

Great coffee!

I love this coffee. I have enjoyed Ka’u coffee for the past 15 years and this is at the top of my list. It arrives quickly, freshly roasted and carefully packaged. I use it for espresso and enjoy the floral, nutty flavor and the perfect crema.

Layers of Deliciousness

I was surprised at how delicious this coffee was! I am typically a light to medium light roast kind of guy. This is a solid medium roast, and very flavorful at that. Call me happy!

See those bubbles? When your coffee blooms with bubbles it’s a sign that it’s been recently roasted. The fresher the coffee, the more intensity you’ll get because great flavors and aromas fade over time.

☛ Our coffees are roasted-to-order each week, then packaged and shipped immediately, and arrive with the roast dates stamped on the bag.
