The Merrie Monarch Festival: A Celebration of Hula & Hawaiian Culture

The Merrie Monarch Festival is Hawai‘i’s most prestigious hula competition and cultural celebration, held annually in Hilo during the last week of April. This world-renowned event honors King David Kalākaua—fondly remembered as the “Merrie Monarch”—who played a pivotal role in revitalizing hula, music, and Hawaiian traditions during his reign in the late 1800s.

Elevating Hawaiian Traditions

Founded in 1963, the Merrie Monarch Festival began as a way to uplift the local economy and share the richness of Hawaiian culture. Today, it serves as an international stage for the most talented hālau (hula schools) to express their discipline, artistry, and deep connection to Hawaiian storytelling through dance.

Festival Highlights

  • Hō‘ike Night – A free exhibition night showcasing breathtaking performances from hālau and invited guests.

  • Miss Aloha Hula – A solo competition where dancers perform bothkahiko (ancient) and‘auana (modern) hula.

  • Group Hula Kahiko & ‘Auana – Hālau perform in traditional and modern styles, conveying stories through movement, chant, and music.

  • Merrie Monarch Parade – A vibrant procession through downtown Hilo, celebrating Hawaiian royalty, community, and pride.

The Silver Jubilee: Honoring 25 Years of Tradition

In 1886, King Kalākaua celebrated his 50th birthday with a grand jubilee—one of the most lavish events in Hawaiian history. The festivities lasted for several days and reflected his love for Hawaiian culture, music, and international diplomacy. More than a royal celebration, the jubilee symbolized Kalākaua’s enduring vision: to preserve and elevate Hawaiian identity on the world stage. And so began the Merrie Monarch Festival, a declaration of Hawaiian resilience, culture, and national pride, which continues to celebrate hula and Hawaiian arts.

As we honor this historic celebration, we also reflect on King Kalākaua’s enduring legacy. His Jubilee stands as a symbol of a sovereign Hawai‘i— an era when the monarchy stood strong, and its people embraced their identity with pride.
